Strategies to Avoid Spelling Mistakes for Improving Scholastic Achievement of English Language among Students

This study shows the causes of spelling mistakes and the strategies to avoid these mistakes. The researcher introduces a new approach to spelling which is number- word strategy. The problem of this research is pertinent to the sixth grade students. This research is done to improve the sixth grade students’ ability in spelling. The type of the research is the qualitative and quantitative design which aims to evaluate the impact of the new approach. The number of the subjects in this research is 57 sixth grade students. The questionnaire and the pre-post test are the instruments used in this study to collect the data. In collecting the data, students are given a spelling test to compare the results of the pre-test and the post-test in order to identify the effectiveness of the number- word strategy. The researcher uses the questionnaire as a tool to differentiate between the traditional spelling approaches used by some schools in greater Saida area and the new approach introduced by the researcher. After analyzing the data, the findings show that students’ ability in improving their spelling mistakes is categorized as good level. Therefore, the findings of this research assure that the new approach will be useful for English teachers in teaching spelling. Finally, the researcher recommends conducting this new approach with larger groups of subjects so that generalizations can be made. The researcher believes that the new approach will have greater impact if it is done over a longer period of time.
