The extent of progress in language acquisition of the first secondary students at Ghobeiry public school: a case study

The overall reform process of the educational system in Lebanon, initiated by the new curriculum, has paved the ground for teachers to adopt new work and teaching strategies in order to transform the class into an interactive space between a dynamic learner and an informed teacher. Thus, the activities employed by the new language instruction and investigated in this research are designed to involve learners in individual, cooperative, pair and group work. For the present study, three tests, diagnostic, formative and summative, consisting of graphic organizers, surveying, pre-reading, cloze, word analysis, contextual clues, multiple choice and text completion activities, were devised to assess the students’ progress and help them promote their language proficiency and skills. The data were collected and the findings were as follows: 1) Students were able to reach a noticeable foreign-language acquisition through the integration of vocabulary, syntax, morphology language components as well as reading comprehension skills. 2) The language classrooms were interactive places where students were given the opportunity to freely express thoughts and get feedback without any pressure of language concerns.
