The three major factors for placing students at-risk are: personal, family, and academic. The sample of the study consisted of 163 elementary and middle school teachers who were randomly selected from 14 randomly chosen private schools in Beirut, Lebanon. The age group of the teachers, their educational background and their years of teaching experience were factors which were compared to the teachers' responses.--Two questionnaires were used in this study, the Risk Scale and the Strategies Scale which were generated by Frymier's Phi Delta Kappa study of students at-risk in 1989. The questionnaires were administered in English and adapted to the Lebanese situation. The data obtained were analyzed using the SPSS for Windows computer program. Teachers' responses were reported and compared using Chi-Square. All statistical tests were conducted at 0.05 alpha level. Results showed that elementary and middle school teachers perceived the family factor of high influence in contributing to place students at-risk. Moreover, there was no significant difference among the definer groups with regards to their age group, educational background and their years of teaching experience in their perception of the factors. However, a significant difference was observed among teachers with different years of experience regarding the family factor. Also, results showed that teachers would use the same strategies when dealing with at-risk students. Suggestions for teachers and administrators were drawn from the results. | |
