520 3 _aThe choice of an occupation, or course of higher study, is a major decision that adolescents must make as they enter the world of work. Career maturity at secondary school age has been shown to be a good indicator of eventual occupational success. The purpose of this study was to investigate Grade 12 students? career goals and conceptions of the school education and the career maturity of Lebanese Grade 12 students as measured by the Career Development Inventory (CDI). The study also investigated the relationship between career maturity and students? career planning, exploration and eventual career goals and the CDI use in the Lebanese context. The study also enabled insights into possible influences of program type and gender on upper secondary students? career maturity.--The research questions were investigated using a focus group interview, the Career Development Inventory (Thompson, Lindeman, Super, Jordan, & Myers, 1981), and individual interviews to 11 Grade 12 students, seven enrolled in the BL (Baccalaur?at Libanais) program, and four enrolled in the IB (International Baccalaureate) program, four girls and seven boys. Results suggest that few students had definite career goals while the majority still had not yet decided on a particular future major. Most of the students had low career maturity scores on the CDI. In addition, the CDI was found to be suitable to use in the Lebanese context. The limited data available did not suggest any relation between the career maturity of students and the programs they are enrolled in or their gender. The results of this study will be of interest for school counselors. Implications from a counseling perspective were formulated for each student. Findings of this study will help school counselors in assessing the student's career maturity by using the CDI. Moreover, results from this study will contribute to the existing literature based on the low career maturity of Lebanese students and the shortage of career guidance programs in the Lebanese secondary schooling. Some issues still need more investigation such as the relation between various factors and career maturity and the use of the CDI in diverse Lebanese populations.
