Portfolios, a collection of students’ work samples that show their efforts, progress, and reflections, represent a major shift in the field of assessment. Little research is offered on the impact of portfolios on foreign language learners. Therefore, this pilot study investigated the relationship between the use of portfolios as a learning tool and students’ proficiency in the language as a result. Thirty seventh grade students participated in this study and were equally and randomly assigned into two groups: experimental and controls groups. The experimental group collected their writing work samples in portfolios and evaluated them on a time span of 6 months. The instruments used for data collection were: a pretest, a post test, anecdotal records, the students’ portfolios, and reflective forma. Data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Results from the analysis suggested that the 13/15 of the students in the experimental group progressed in their writing skills by at least one level of proficiency. Moreover, portfolios affected the experimental group’s motivation toward academic achievement. Hence, this study added value to previous research by pointing out the effectiveness of portfolios in enhancing students’ accuracy in the language.
