Specifically, this study aims to investigate whether or not inquiry is present in these textbo oks and to determine the inquiry levels (confirmation level, structured inquiry, Guided inquiry and open inquiry) of the experimental activities included in the se textbooks. The following two research questions were addressed in this study: (1) to what extent do science textbooks used at the elementary level in Lebanes e schools encourage teaching and learning by inquiry? And (2) what differences, if any, are there in the inquiry level of activities within the science textbook s? To determine whether the selected science textbooks encourage teaching and learn ing by inquiry, an instrument adapted from Procedures for Conducting Content Ana lysis of Science Textbooks (Chiappetta, Fillman & Sethna (1991b)) was used to an alyze the textbooks in the study. To determine the differences, if any, in the i nquiry level (confirmation, structured, guided or open) of activities within the science textbooks, two coders analyzed all the "experimental activities" presen t in the textbooks using the Assessment of Inquiry Potential (AIP), an analysis scheme developed by Tafoya, Sunal & Knecht (1980). Results show that the analyzed textbooks have the potential to encourage inquiry learning and teaching. However, the analysis of the experimental activities rev ealed that all the activities included in these textbooks belong to two out of f our level of inquiry: the confirmation and the structured inquiry level neglecti ng the guided and the open levels. Based on these results recommendations for fu rther research were drawn UR - http://library.aub.edu.lb/search~S1?/X%28education+and+department%29&Da=1999&Db=2016&SORT=D&m=y&m=z/X%28education+and+department%29&Da=1999&Db=2016&SORT=D&m=y&m=z&SUBKEY=%28education+and+department%29/151%2C316%2C316%2CB/frameset&FF=X%28education+and+depa ER -
