The Impact of Applying the Inquiry Based Mathematics Instruction on the Thinking Skills of Six Graders at Houssam Eddine Hariri High School in Saida Lebanon
Material type:
TextPublication details: Beirut Lebanese International University 2013Description: 104 pagesSubject(s): Online resources: Abstract: Inquiry is a dynamic approach to learning that involves exploring the world, asking questions, making discoveries, and rigorously testing those discoveries in the search for new understanding. During the last two decades there has been fundamental agreement of the importance of including the inquiry in our teaching structure. This study aims to determine the impact of Inquiry-Based Learning on students’ thinking skills towards mathematics using the levels of the New Taxonomy of Marzano as instrument for the data analysis. Grade 6 learners in Houssam Eddine Hariri High School were taken as sample for the study. The experimental group used inquiry to learn mathematical concept whereas no treatment was given to the control group. The control groups undertook more traditional pedagogical activities. Data gathered from the pre-test and post-test and then form a questionnaire were analyzed descriptively. Data analyses were carried out using means, standard deviations, and T-test. The study showed that there was a statistically significant difference at (P = 0.05) in the development of thinking skills, metacognition, and self-system of sixth graders attributed to the implementation of inquiry-based approach. This study recommended designing a teaching program or curriculum that responds to the requirement to apply such approach and to integrate an inquiry course in university for the prospective math teachers.
