Il constitue le dernier de ses écrits, la partie finale ayant vraisemblablement été conçue quelques semaines avant sa mort, et l’œuvre étant inachevée.<br/><br/>Sa rédaction s’est établie tout au long des deux dernières années de sa vie, jusqu’à son refuge au château d'Ermenonville : la nature solitaire et paranoïaque de l’auteur malgré une notoriété croissante l’a contraint à cet exil après l’accueil de ses Dialogues, et peut-être également la mort de Louis François de Bourbon (dit le Prince de Conti) durant l’été 1776. "
