Summary, etc. Supervision is recognized as a critical component of a successful school; however, the Lebanese context lacks enough research studies on the function of the role of the supervisor. That is why different schools in Lebanon view it from different perspectives and practice it differently. This study follows the action research design. It aims to explore the roles and the functions of the supervisor in a Lebanese context, questioning the importance of this role and its power to steer school development. Its purpose is two-fold: 1) explore and understand the broad responsibilities of the role of the supervisor and 2) focus on the factors that improve this role and its effect on school development. In this study, data were collected using observation diaries and journal notes. The author kept a detailed journal during the first phase of the study wherein she was a participant observer living in the context and being a part of it. In the second phase, the functions of 4 supervisors were also observed by the author in the field work. Results revealed that supervisors in Lebanese schools still practice the directive approach. However, the self-observation of the author revealed that the supervisor’s role could be changed to become more effective by taking initiative in the decision making process.
