| Summary, etc. | Whether a native English speaking teacher (NEST) or a nonnative English speaking teacher (NNEST) is a more effective teacher of English as a second or foreign l anguage (ESL / EFL ) is still a debatable unresolved issue among English languag e teaching (ELT) specialists. The controversy reported in the literature starts with the definition of the terms NEST and NNEST. Furthermore, research findings show that there are differences between NESTs and NNESTs at the pedagogical, lin guistic and psychological levels. This study investigates the Lebanese students' perceptions of the practices and effectiveness of their NESTs and NNESTs in and outside the classroom. For this purpose, a 58- item questionnaire was administered to stude nts at two Lebanese private schools whose English language teachers consist of b oth NESTs and NNESTs. The results were analyzed using paired sample t- tests for all the items, for th e categories identified (pedagogical, linguistic and psychological) and for each item in the questionnaire. The analysis of results showed that there are signif icant differences in students' perceptions of the effectiveness of their NESTs a nd NNESTs in the three categories, except for three areas related to the teacher s' pedagogical skills. |
