| Summary, etc. | The purpose of this study was twofold, first to describe and examine two differe nt patterns of in-house professional development programs in two types of privat e schools in Lebanon, an American and a Jesuit-French, and second to consider th e impact of in-house programs on teachers' professional growth as seen by the te achers themselves. This research also aimed at drawing conclusions that may prov ide guidelines for other schools willing to establish programs of in-house train ing. The research questions behind this study were to find out how the two schoo ls supported and facilitated teachers' professional development, what was the im pact of in-house training on improvement of instruction, teachers' involvement i n teamwork and decision-making at the schools, and if differences in the setups and approaches influenced teachers' perceptions of professional growth. Data wer e collected through documents, semi-structured interviews with administrators, a nd a thorough questionnaire completed by teachers. The participants were the Hea ds of the two schools, Directors of professional development programs, and 142 t eachers. The SPSS program was used to process and compare data from questionnair es. A comparative analysis was used to select and interpret data from all instru ments. The results show that despite differences in the structures and procedure s of professional development programs in the two schools, both involve teachers in their in-house activities and provide them with good bases before extending their services outside, provide internal as well as external training all year l ong, and integrate trainings aspects into the school's set-up. Both schools have also developed external connections with other schools, and with local and fore ign associations for professional development. More importantly, teachers in bot h schools have high positive feelings about their in-house training experiences as well as motivation for continuous professional growth. The findings of this s tudy helped to draw conclusions about in-house professional development programs , and to provide a base for recommendations for further research on partnership among schools, setting policies for professional development, and others. |
