| Summary, etc. | This thesis defines autism, presents a background knowledge about it, and demonstrates how autistic individuals deal with certain aspects of life especially affection, language, and communication. Most importantly, it sheds light on the relation of autism to reading. It examines two case studies which bring in subjects of the same gender but different ages, classes, and ethnic backgrounds. They are conducted for the purpose of relating the research findings in the literature of this thesis to the real world. The carried-out observation shows how the majority of students with autism behave in class with their teachers and with their peers. The results of the case studies indicate that each student with autism, PDD (Pervasive Developmental Disorder), or ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder) has a specific capacity and way of learning reading. Many students with autism need visual aids while others can do without them. They also show signs of presence of several autistic symptoms, among them showing indifference to people, potential echolalia, and trouble in language learning and communication. |
