Summary, etc. “Language is the pinnacle of the culture of every nation, and if assimilation annihilates identity, then the people too will be annihilated” (Bari, 1996, p. 67 in Skutnabb-Kangas, 2000, p. 140). This thesis defines language and other major issues related to it such as language loss, language shift, code-switching, bilingualism, and diglossia. It also defines culture, identity, and diaspora. Most importantly, it sheds light on the relation between language and identity. In addition, this research study gives background knowledge about Armenians: their history, their situation in the diaspora, and the social and linguistic problems they currently face as a minority in the contemporary Arab World especially Lebanon, Jordan, and the UAE. It examines 427 subjects from Lebanon, Jordan, and the UAE who have been chosen randomly from different age groups, both genders, and different social and educational backgrounds. For collecting data, a self-constructed questionnaire has been used. Several prominent figures of the Armenian community in Lebanon, Jordan, and the UAE have been interviewed, and many subjects have been observed. They are all conducted for the purpose of relating the literature of this thesis to the real world. For statistical analysis, the SPSS software (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) has been used. The carried observations show that as a result of the direct contact with the Arab community, Armenians have started using a mixed language code-switching from Arabic, English and French. In addition to that, the percentage of exogamy has increased and the number of students in Armenian schools has decreased. The results of the research conducted indicate that the Armenian language, especially Western Armenian, is at risk. Many Armenians in Lebanon, Jordan, and the UAE are well integrated into the Arab community and many others are on their way toward assimilation.
