Summary, etc. The purpose of the study was to examine the relation and mediating relation between Body Mass Index (BMI), self esteem, body image dissatisfaction and social pressure in a sample of 496 teenagers from Lebanese private and public schools. The age of the students ranged between 16 and 23 years. Body image was assessed using the Body-Esteem Scale for Adolescents and Adults, BMI was calculated based on measures of height and weight, self esteem was assessed using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and social pressure was examined using a 5-point self-rated scale adapted from Thompson (1999). Means, medians, ranges, standard deviations, and correlation coefficients were evaluated among observed variables using SPSS software Version 20. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) using SPSS AMOS software Version 20 was used in order to test the hypothesized models of the study. The direct effect results indicated that BMI was positively related to social pressure but not significantly related to body esteem and self esteem. Further, social pressure was related positively to self esteem and negatively to body esteem. In turn, body esteem related positively to self esteem. The indirect effects of BMI on self esteem mediated by body esteem and social pressure combined were relatively mild (standardized indirect coefficient .094). The indirect effects of social pressure on self esteem mediated by body esteem was moderately strong (standardized indirect coefficient= -.299). When comparing the direct effects for boys and girls, the results showed that girls who had larger BMI and boys who experienced more social pressure to lose weight tended to have higher self esteem. Inversely, larger BMI for boys and stronger social pressure for girls had little direct effects on self esteem. In addition, BMI had stronger direct effect on social pressure in girls than in boys. For girls and boys, social pressure mediated the effect of BMI on body esteem, which in turn mediated the effect of social pressure and self esteem. However, for boys, social pressure also mediated the effect of BMI on self esteem. These results have implications for identifying prevention and counseling strategies that school counselors can use to promote positive body image and self esteem in adolescent boys and girls.
