520 3# - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Video games have become one of the favorite activities worlds wide. A growing body of research is linking violent video game play to aggressive cognition, attitudes, and behavior that is to a deficiency of social skills. Not enough research has been conducted in Lebanon concerning this issue, and since a large number of the Lebanese teenagers are heavily involved in video games and exposure to the media, especially in urban societies. It is important to conduct research on this issue. The purpose of this study is: (1) To examine whether there is an association between violent video game exposure and a) aggressive behavior b) hostility c) and school average. (2) To document a) the video game habits among Lebanese adolescents, b) and the level of parental involvements and monitoring of their children's video game exposure. (3) To examine whether time spent on playing video games, and the type of games played, vary between males and females. A stratified random sample design was used to draw a sample of 250, 8th and 9th grade students (13 - 15 years). The design for the sample collection was based on four primary stratified variables: gender, age, grade level and geographic location. The questionnaire was piloted for the purpose of this study. Each student completed an anonymous questionnaire developed by the researcher that gathered descriptive data about student's habits, attitudes and knowledge of video games, as well as school performance. Each student completed the Aggression Questionnaire (Buss & Perry, 1992), which is a self report, 5 point Likert Scale type that measured the aggressive behavior of each student.Parents of the chosen sample completed a questionnaire that gathered data about the parental involvement in putting time limits for their children's video game habits and about video game ratings, a modified version of the Buss and Perry (1992). Aggression Questionnaires were completed by the parents that measured the aggressive behavior of their children.A series of correlation coefficients and t - tests was used to analyze the data. Results of this study revealed a positive correspondence between exposure to violent video games, and aggressive behavior and school average, but it did not reveal any relation to hostility. Results did not show an association between time spent on video games and school average. Parental involvement in monitoring their children's video game habits and limiting time for their children's video game play did not appear to have any significant relation; therefore parental involvement did not appear to be a protective factor in this study. The results also revealed that gender was significantly related to electronic media game habits. It is hoped that youth, parents, and educators can begin to use the results of this study to modify children's video game habits in ways that promote children's health and school success.
