The classification of animals is a huge body of knowledge that contains a lot concepts and scientific names, and many teachers consider it a difficult topic to teach and study. This study investigated the effect of using web-based hypermedia as an alternative to textbooks in order to facilitate studying the materials, to improve achievement, and to make learning more enjoyable.--The design of this study was a treatment-posttest two-group design. The participants were 46 students in two sections of the 11th grade high school class with approximately equal number of males and females. One section was assigned to control conditions and the other was assigned to experimental conditions. The dependent variable was the students' achievement as measured by a test made of fifty-multiple choice items. The independent variable was the instructional approach which was done under two levels: web-based hypermedia approach and text-based approach. The text-based approach follows the method presented in the science textbook adopted by the school while the hypermedia approach used a web-based program that was designed by the researcher using the same content and published on the school's Intranet.--The treatment lasted for two weeks after which the achievement test was given to both classes, control and experimental. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was carried out using grades of prior achievement in biology and Information Technology as covariates since they are highly related to the lesson itself and the method of instruction. The results showed that the experimental group scored significantly higher than the control group. A major educational implication was that more curriculum-based educational software should be designed to enhance learning.
