Based on the strong belief in the efficiency of e-learning in bolstering students’ motivation and in creating a community where students share, actively engage in communication and access course materials and content, the research study described below demonstrates the crucial role of e-learning in language communities. The objective of this study is not just to draw a comparison between traditional and electronic teaching methods but to study the outcome of English as a second language (ESL) e-learning settings and to try to exploit to the full the advantages that e-learning offers. The scope of the pilot project is to provide ESL teaching to adults at the beginner level via a virtual classroom. The primary focus of this study is to find out whether electronic online ESL programs significantly help students acquire language skills and enhance their attitudes toward online learning. A pilot study was conducted at a private university on two ESL classes to test and exploit the usefulness of a website that I created and uploaded onto a platform or a learning management system (Moodle). In the post-instruction stage, the relationship between the online frequency usage and the language proficiency level is reported. The first section of the classroom (the control group) was taught traditionally, while the second one (the experimental group) was taught with the same content as the textbook materials but in an electronic format utilizing my e-learning platform and the interactive website in a blended environment. The online e-course effectiveness testing was based on quantitative analyses of the pre- and post-course scores. Both groups were pre- and post-tested using the same testing tool, and students’ feedback and attitude toward online EFL e-courses were gathered based on qualitative analyses using post-treatment questionnaires. The results of both the qualitative and the quantitative studies showed that e-students performed better and scored higher than students in the traditional classroom. The results proved my main hypothesis: The design of an EFL virtual learning community that caters for different learning styles and strategies and exploit media technologies can be better in effectiveness than traditional settings.
