The purpose of this study is to shed light on the influence of Arabic as a first language on using the English tenses in grade six. It tested two hypotheses: 1) Arabic did not influence grade-six students’ use of the English tense and aspect, and 2) grade-six students did not share any common or frequent errors in English tenses. The subjects were fifty grade-six students chosen from two classes in a school in Beirut. They were asked to write on five topics, each testing one of the English tenses studied by the students. The results showed that the subjects did share common errors in tenses. The results also showed influence of the subjects’ first language on English tenses. Teachers of English as a second language might find these results beneficial in constructing their teaching plans of grammar. Chapter one in the current study opens with a brief explanation of the process of learning a language. It tells the reason why writing is chosen as the topic of this thesis. Chapter one also shows why tense is considered an area of difficulty in learning a foreign language, and therefore researchers and teachers need to give it more consideration. Chapter two allows the reader to have a general view of several issues that are closely related to this paper. Some of these issues are intralingual and crosslingual techniques, tense and aspect, verb errors, contrastive analysis and error analysis. Chapter three tells about the design of the study including data analysis and the method of data collection. It gives an idea of the number and kind of subjects as well as their academic program. Chapter four analyzes the results that were reached by the researcher. Each one of the tenses tested is discussed in a separate part. All the tables and figures that summarize the test results are also presented in this chapter. Chapter five summarizes all the previous chapters. Moreover, it gives implications and recommendations for further studies.
