Teacher-student interaction in second language college classrooms in Lebanon

By: Material type: TextTextPublication details: Beirut Université Libanaise - Faculté des lettres 2008Description: 143 pagesSubject(s): Online resources: Abstract: Teacher-student interaction is an important issue that influences the quality of language learning in classrooms all over the world. In an attempt to improve this interaction in the various language classes and especially in second language classrooms in colleges in Lebanon, I held this study hoping it would help teachers and school administrations with this task. This thesis investigates the variables supposed to affect teacher-student interaction, such as teacher qualities, class management abilities, peer cooperation, role of the administration, materials used, feedback, use of English, as well as the role of teacher training, innovation, and techniques. The response from classes in colleges all over the country to teacher and student questionnaires and a class observation sheet were examined and analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively after which conclusions were made and recommendations were reached. First, the demographic factors were analyzed, and then the study went on to look into the influence of these factors on the variables that go into teacher-student interaction. The second step was to study differences in teachers’ opinions when they were responding individually and their responses when they answered about teachers in general. Teachers’ responses were not consistent; responses differed to a large extent. The third part of the study scrutinized the comparison made between teachers’ and students’ responses. The same results were in evidence again. All these differences served to weaken the interaction going on in classrooms. It is recommended that a thorough and comprehensive study be made, that would establish the need for cooperation, training, and continuous research into all that can ensure the updating of teaching styles, materials and techniques.
